Jack Korn died in the 1950's (?) and Malvina married Albert Berry, who died in the early 1970's.

(*)Today, the town name is Pomoryany. It is in the Ukraine, has a population of a few thousand and, of course, no Jews. The old cemetery is in poor condition with most of the stones having been stolen.

I believe that your map of eastern Galicia may be the only one on the net which shows the town of Pamuran. Every search seems to end up there. Pamuran was a small town but many of the families who left near the turn of the 19th century seemed to end up in Toronto.

I have looked over your Turkel Tree.  I do have some questions, however.  You have a Jacob Turkel in the tree.  I do believe he had a brother Joseph Turkel.  Joseph was married to a Ruchel Baile Dacher who they called Rose.  They had 7 or 8 children.  Their names were Samuel, Jacob, Frank, Pauline who was married to a Gerber, Frieda, Abraham who changed his name to Karl, an Eli and an Anna.
I see in your tree that under Benjamin Turkel, a Rose, born abt 1907.  My great aunt was born around 1877.  There is a Pauline Turkel married to a Myron Gerber.  Could this be the same family.  My cousins tell me that the Turkels, Joseph and Jacob, lived in Mikulincie before they came to the US.  I, also, have a death certificate for a Bessie Turkel.  Her maiden name on her death certificate was Seifstein, which was my great grandmothers maiden name.  On some lists I have received from Miriam Weiner from the archives in Lvov and Warsaw Joseph or Yur as he was called, also, had Seifstein after the Turkel.  Confusing right.
Please let me hear from you.

I wanted to know about Studs Turkel.   I was wondering if he was the guy I was asked by the faculty to give a tour of Adelphi University to many years ago when I was a student there.  You can't forget a name like Studs. I didn't know who he was then. I know more about him now after reading your.   Maybe it wasn't him at all.

I am the daughter of Michael S. Turkel (1900-1990) and Shirley Friedman.  The family came to NY in 1909 when the spelling of 'Terkel' was changed to 'Turkel'.  Paternal grandparents were Samuel Terkel and Minnie Winick.  I believe they were from a village near Bialystock (Poland-Russia).  I am a second cousin of Studs, but don't know the connection.  Would like to hear from others.

My father, Arnold Turkel, son of Moses Turkel, grandson of Beryl Turkel told me the following story to explain the name Turkel:  A young male member of the family escaped from Russia into Galicia (then part of Austria-Hungry) to avoid being forced into the Russian army.  To explain where he came from he told everyone the he came from Turkey.  He became known as the Turk of El Turk, which eventually became Turkel.
