Rabbi Jekel was born in Tarnopol (1899) to Rabbi Shraga Feiv`l and was named after Rabbi Yaacov Weidenfeld, his grandfather on his mother's side.  He learned in the cloise of Husiatin and Chortkov.  Then he was sent to learn in Buchach, with the prominent Rabbi RMZ"W - Mordechai Zeev Wolf Turkel, the brother of his grand father (Rabbi Eliezer-Lippe Turkel).  At the beginning of WWI (1914) they moved to Vienna.   In 1928 he married Brand`l (Bronia) Backenroth from Schodnice and moved there.   Rabbi Jekel remained prominent learner, even though he was secularily educated.   The people of Sambor attempted to rescue R` Jekel from being prosecuted by the Nazis.  Regardless, he was taken with his family to Belzitz in September 1942 and was killed two months later.
